#MadeofMelbourne Hair and Makeup Artist Julie Isai has built a business incorporating private and group lessons. Read on to see what she shares about her experience and how to help others.
At what point did you know you wanted to make Makeup Artistry your career?
Beauty was something I enjoyed from childhood. I believe it stemmed from the days I used to watch my beautiful mother get ready for her events and be in awe of her. I couldn’t wait for her to leave to her event so that I could then get into her little personal kit and play makeups!
What was the best advice you have ever received?
To not worry too much about what others think.
Build a very thick skin and be prepared to take some lows with the highs.
If you are confident enough in your work and you absolutely LOVE what you do, that should be the only thing that matters!
What do you think people don’t realise about working as a Makeup Artist?
It is not as easy at it looks.
The extremely long hours, the demands and even the back pain that can sometimes follow, it is all part of those very big long hectic days!
But it is so worth it when you get to meet amazing people and see new faces constantly.

When painting a face from a blank canvas, what inspires you?
I tend to be inspired by whoever is sitting in my chair. I like to get to know my client and what they like, and if they allow me – I like to give them a makeover that I think will suit their features best and bring out their gorgeous faces.

What can women do to be their most beautiful self?
Embrace what they have been blessed with! In my 10+ years in makeup, I could safely say that every girl I meet has their own type of beauty and the ones that are confident are always the happiest.
Why is Julie Isai Made of Fashion?
Be it something I was born loving, or something I grew up appreciating – I feel fashion and beauty go hand in hand and I feel very much a part of the industry!
